    Job Description

    Health Data Analyst I

    Non-Exempt Position

     

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

    1. Writes SQL queries to pull data (medical, pharmacy and dental claims; eligibility; premium; lab results & biometrics; predictive model outputs like risk scores and risk of hospitalization measures). Optimizes queries for speed and ensures the accuracy of the data.
    2. Defines the scope of the data analytic requests by clarifying and documenting what questions the end-user is trying to answer and how the results of the analysis will be used after it is delivered. After completion of analysis, performs necessary follow-up to ensure analysis meets expectations and that end-user understands how to interpret it.
    3. Builds visually intuitive Tableau dashboards that are easy to use to answer likely questions from the end-user. Optimizes visualization speed with common filter interactions. Sets up automatic data refreshes, trains end-user in any functionality of dashboard, and schedules regular follow-ups with end-users to see if there are questions or feedback.
    4. Uses Excel to perform advanced ad hoc analytical projects that involve text parsing, lookups, pivot tables, and graphs in a timely manner.
    5. Assists in updating recurring reports. Investigates and takes action to correct any discrepancy in the data to ensure the integrity of the reports.  
    6. Presents data and conclusions to department and manager for peer review.
    7. Finds meaningful insights from large data sets and assigned analytical assignments and succinctly summarizes and presents conclusions and key takeaways to others.
    8. Finds ways to automate and streamline projects and reports that are commonly recurring.
    9. Maintains strict confidentiality.
    10. Performs other related duties as required.

    Health Data Analyst II

    Non-Exempt Position

     

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

    1. Uses looped queries and/or stored procedures to build extracts to support data visualizations. Writes SQL queries to pull data (medical, pharmacy and dental claims; eligibility; premium; lab results & biometrics; predictive model outputs like risk scores and risk of hospitalization measures). Optimizes queries for speed and ensures the accuracy of the data.
    2. Defines the scope of the data analytic requests by clarifying and documenting what questions the end-user is trying to answer and how the results of the analysis will be used after it is delivered. After completion of analysis, performs necessary follow-up to ensure analysis meets expectations and that the end-user understands how to interpret it.
    3. Uses statistical analysis to create and/or apply predictive analytics that improves the underwriting, clinical/case management, or provider relations contracting/management processes.
    4. Builds and supports advanced Tableau dashboards that are stable tools for other departments within PEHP and are regularly being enhanced based on the end-users’ feedback.
    5. Helps build, manage, and/or enhance UW models (manual rate, risk score, small-group automated and large group stand-alones). Helps build, manage, and/or enhance data analysis that supports the UW process (e.g. trend driver, UW dashboard, etc.).
    6. Presents data and conclusions to other departments within PEHP.

    Health Data Analyst III

    Exempt Position

     

    POSITION SUMMARY

    Performs complex analysis on healthcare data using database queries, spreadsheets, programming languages, statistical software, and data visualization software.  Responsible for highlighting insights, key takeaways, and summarizing results from large datasets in a manner that is easy to understand and digest for internal and external audiences.

     

     

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

    1. Develops predictive analytics to support actionable insights, allocate limited resources, and help guide rate setting process. Uses familiarity with healthcare data to extract and summarize the appropriate data elements for statistical model. Uses statistical software to construct, validate, and tune a predictive model.  Implements model results into business processes.
    2. Acts as content expert for data related to the assigned PEHP internal customer area. Supports PEHP internal customer area in reporting, research, data exploration, and embedding actionable data insights into business workflow. Gains familiarity of relevant data sources and writes SQL queries/stored procedures to extract and analyze data. Builds dashboards and/or other tools or reports as requested by the customer. May involve statistical analysis to verify/highlight potential insights from data.
    3. Provides analytical support of PEHP enterprise level initiatives. Works with databases, software programming, and or statistical analysis to help develop analytical tools that help support the division’s strategic initiatives.
    4. Presents technical results to non-technical audience. Clearly articulates, summarizes, and describes technical concepts in a way that non-technical audience can understand. Uses data visualizations and summaries to intuitively highlight key takeaways.
    5. Supports internal and external reporting. Supports annual HEDIS reports and the accompanying audit, actionable insight report design, and implementation for employer groups, and/or automation of regular periodic reports to both internal/external customers.
    6. Mentors, supports, and provides guidance to Health Data Analysts I and II, as assigned.
    7. Supports underwriting functions as needed.
    8. Maintains strict confidentiality.
    9. Performs other related duties as required.

    Required Experience

    Health Data Analyst I

    Education and Experience

    Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative or clinical field and one (1) year of data analysis experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Knowledge of Tableau is preferred. Experience related to health care or data formats associated with medical, pharmacy and dental claims is preferred. Extensive knowledge of SQL and/or programming (VBA, Python or similar languages) is preferred.

    Health Data Analyst II

    Education and Experience

    Bachelors degree in a quantitative or clinical field and three (3) years of general analytical experience with a minimum of one year health specific experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Intermediate experience building Tableau dashboards is preferred.

    Health Data Analyst III

    Education and Experience

    Bachelor’s degree with a strong emphasis in a quantitative, technical, or clinical field and five (5) years of analytical experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Knowledge of health insurance industry is preferred.

     

    Intermediate experience building Tableau dashboards is preferred.
